RFS Private 5G Credentials and Future Plans

Over the last 12 months, here at RFS we have significantly increased our capabilities when it comes to private 5G. Just over a year on from the initial go-live date for Private 5G at the Hannover site, we round up all of the Private 5G news and successes at RFS.

Building on our existing expertise around Private 5G, in July 2024 Radio Frequency Systems launched its own private 5G network for both customer proof of concept (POC) demonstrations and to support its own on-site manufacturing facility in Hannover, following application approval from the German authorities.

Since then, the use cases have expanded significantly, with the network serving multiple areas of RFS’s Hannover campus. These initiatives include supporting R&D infrastructure, for example, enhancing the connectivity of the current test and measurement range and bringing online the recently installed fire testing chamber.

The Private 5G network is also now connecting a new raw materials warehouse. The network allows the facility to use an active SAP Warehouse Management System (WMS) for smoother operations and improved efficiency. The nature of the building had made it challenging to deploy and operate this system over WiFi, but the 5G connection ensures the continuous connectivity and meets the cybersecurity requirements needed to support the connected warehouse.

A project to achieve a similar Private 5G set-up in RFS’s Suzhou facility is also underway. This will also support a range of applications that optimize operations using a secure, reliable, and low-latency network. As just one example, the plans include facilitating a fully automated, unmanned warehouse by using the Private 5G network to provide connectivity for an intelligent forklift system.

The RFS Private 5G networks are part of a wider initiative to support customers across an increasing range of verticals to meet their evolving connectivity needs. With the deployment in Hannover, and the planned Suzhou project, RFS can demonstrate to customers in both regions how RFS can practically support their own Private 5G ambitions. This includes assisting customers at multiple key stages of the process, from the 5G private network license application to the design and deployment of the systems needed.

As customers in markets like mining, energy, transport, and manufacturing start to utilize Industrial IoT applications, RFS, alongside key partners is helping to streamline the adoption of private 5G for customers, especially those working across industrial sectors.

Dietmar Brunsch, Head of Innovation at RFS commented, “The initial Private 5G roll out at RFS is hugely exciting for the company in several ways. Not only does it allow us to gain valuable knowledge and expertise in deploying private networks, it allows us to bring customers to site and demonstrate how a similar setup would work. It expands our testing capabilities, allowing customers to have high confidence in their network design ahead of deployment. And it benefits us directly as we have the opportunity to lead by example, utilizing 5G for more of our own manufacturing and R&D processes.”
